Dell, Lenovo Join Campaign To Fight Global Climate Change

Dell and Lenovo are joining several dozen companies, cities and non-profit organizations to launch a campaign to fight global climate change.

The campaign, called Together, is an initiative backed by The Climate Group. To date, the organization claims to have helped consumers save more than 500,000 tons of carbon dioxide and more than $200 million on household energy bills.

The Together initiative, first launched in the U.K. last year, was created to promote products, services and initiatives that offer measurable energy-saving results, according to The Climate Group. The organization plans to use a third party, Environmental Resources Management, to verify savings for every Together solution.

"Climate change is a global issue that requires a global response," said Dr. Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group, in a statement. "Following a successful first year in the U.K., we're proud to announce the U.S. launch of Together. With plans for an international rollout to Australia, China and India, Together is poised to engage citizens of the biggest greenhouse-gas-emitting nations in the world."

Dell and Lenovo are joined by Chase, MySpace, Nestle Waters, RecycleBank, smart USA, Target and Timberland; the cities of Boston, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Seattle; and nonprofits including ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, The American Red Cross in Greater New York, Climate Counts, Global Footprint Network, Mercy Corps, National Wildlife Federation and The Center for a New American Dream. Dozens more are set to join in the coming months. MTV, News Corporation and Time Warner have joined the campaign as media partners.

"We are at a historic point in time when the combined efforts of the 'ReGeneration'--people of all ages around the world--are coming together to protect our shared Earth. In partnering with The Climate Group in launching Together, we're helping the ReGeneration share meaningful actions that protect our environment," said Michael Dell, chairman and CEO of Dell.

Dell, which claims to be the first major computer manufacturer to offer Silver 80 PLUS-certified power supplies, reported that it recovered 102 million pounds of IT equipment from customers during 2007, a 20 percent increase from the previous year. The 80 PLUS specification meets the EPA's Energy Star 4.0 standard that requires the use of 80 percent or more efficient power supplies.

Last month, Dell said its laptops and desktops are being designed to consume up to 25 percent less energy by 2010 relative to systems offered today. Dell also recently unveiled the Vostro Energy-Smart 410 desktop computer that can save customers up to 47 percent in annual energy costs without sacrificing power and performance. In addition, Dell is ahead of its goal to make its operations carbon-neutral by the end of 2008, according to the company.

Lenovo, for its part, has set a voluntary target of improving its operational carbon efficiency 10 percent by 2012, against a baseline of 2007, according to the company's Web site.

"It is a new world, one in which business, as arguably the most powerful institution on the planet, must accept its responsibility to address the challenges we all face. Lenovo is delighted to join Together and The Climate Group in offering sustainable solutions to the climate change challenge," said Fran O'Sullivan, Lenovo Product Group senior vice president, in a statement.

HP India Launches Hardware Recycling Program

HP has announced the expansion of its product return and recycling program to enterprise customers in India. The Planet Partners Hardware Recycling Program [PPP] offers to take back end-of-life HP and non-HP computing equipment like personal computers, laptops, computer monitors, handhelds, notebooks, servers, printers, scanners and fax machines, as well as associated external components such as cables, mice and keyboards.

According to the company, the plastics and metals recovered from products recycled by HP have been used in new HP products, as well as a range of other uses including auto body parts, clothes hangers, plastic toys, fence posts, serving trays and roof tiles.

“The number of PCs, servers, print cartridges and other electronics reaching the end of their usable life is growing rapidly. It is critical that we work with our customers to explore innovative approaches to electronics recycling so that we can offer the most environmentally responsible solutions available while providing them with convenient choices,” said Jean-Claude Vanderstraeten, Director, Environmental Management, HP Asia Pacific & Japan.

HP claims to have recycled nearly 1 billion pounds (450,000 metric tons) of electronic products and supplies by the end of 2007. It has now set an aggressive new goal to recover an additional 1 billion pounds for reuse and recycling by the end of 2010.

AMD Beating Nvidia On Intel Centrino 2 Graphics?

A delay to the launch of Intel's next-generation notebook platform, codenamed Montevina, has been sweet-and-sour news for Advanced Micro Devices, according to AMD Graphics Product Group GM Rick Bergman.

That's because the Montevina delay may have given Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD a head start on back-to-school season with its own new mobile platform, Puma, but on the flip side AMD's graphics side of the house is positioned for a big swing in getting its ATI products into the next wave of Intel-based notebooks that will be branded Centrino 2, Bergman told ChannelWeb last Friday.

"It's another reason why you go for that sweet spot," Bergman said while explaining AMD's graphics strategy of targeting the $200 to $300 segment of the discrete market. "You can use our new chips in notebooks but you can't use Nvidia's 100-watt thing."

He said that when Montevina does arrive in mid-July, AMD would see its discrete graphics share on the new platform jump markedly over the previous Intel notebook platform known as Santa Rosa.

"ATI is well-positioned there in notebooks. Our share in the Intel platforms, we have a much lower share in Santa Rosa, but it jumps 30 points in Montevina," Bergman said.

Intel in late May pushed back the release of the full Montevina platform from late June to early August, with a partial launch of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chip maker's fifth-generation Centrino notebook platform set for mid-July, according to an Intel spokesperson. Two factors led to the delay -- a technical issue with the Intel 4 Series Express chipset and a paperwork hang-up in getting FCC certification for Centrino 2's basic WiFi chip.

Meanwhile, AMD showcased its Puma mobile platform and new dual-core Turion mobile processor at Taiwan's Computex show in early June. Versions of Puma will be designated under three new AMD initiatives that also touch the chip maker's desktop offerings, AMD Business Class, AMD Live and AMD Game.

PC Use Hits 1 Billion Worldwide

The global use of PCs reached the 1 billion-plus mark and is projected to climb to more than 2 billion by early 2014.

The figures come from from Gartner researchers, who calculate that PC growth is increasing at slightly less than 12 percent annually.

Gartner estimates that growth is primarily in mature markets, such as the U.S., Western Europe and Japan, which make up 58 percent of the world's installed PCs. However, these markets only account for 15 percent of the world's population, according to George Shiffler, research director at Gartner. Shiffler projects that emerging markets will take a larger share of the world's installed base as the rapidly rising PC penetration there continue to drive robust double-digit PC growth.

"Emerging market governments are also increasingly committed to reducing the digital divide by promoting PC use among their citizens through a variety of means, including providing PCs directly to the less affluent," said Luis Anavitarte, research vice president at Gartner, in a statement. "Whereas mature markets accounted for fewer than 60 percent of the first billion installed PCs, we expect emerging markets to account for approximately 70 percent of the next billion installed PCs."

PC churn is one factor for rising global PC installed base figures, as PC users upgrade to new machines. Some older PCs migrate to second owners, some are broken up and recycled, and others end up in garbage heaps.

"We forecast just over 180 million PCs—approximately 16 percent of the existing installed base—-will be replaced this year," Meike Escherich, principal research analyst at Gartner, said in a statement. "We estimate a fifth of these, or some 35 million PCs, will be dumped into landfill with little or no regard for their toxic content. The disposition of retired PCs has become a high-profile issue for many PC vendors, governments and environmental interest groups."
